Boosting retail sales is a tough challenge. But, as our Garsons Esher case study shows, foodservice can play a vital part in attracting new customers.
Service shows the way
There’s an old saying in retail: “customers will remember the service long after they’ve forgotten the price.”
It might be something of a cliché, but that doesn’t stop it being any less true — especially when the ability to provide a great service is also key to attracting new customers.
And, as our restaurant refurbishment for Garsons — a Garden Centre and Farm Shop — shows, a focus on foodservice can be the positive difference your shopping experience needs.
Focusing on foodservice
The Garsons Esher site already had a café before working with us, but its facilities weren’t up to the challenges it faced.
The café could only serve around 130 covers each day, when it needed to provide food and drinks for a customer base closer to 400. It also faced some stiff competition from high-street outlets — not to mention rival garden centres.
Put simply, Garsons Esher had the demand — but no way to meet it.
Rejigging the retail experience
Working with us, Garsons Esher was able to create a brand-new 300-seat restaurant. As well as increasing capacity to meet customer demand, the new restaurant offered a range of ways to make the shopping experience better than ever.
For example, we brought in an innovative table-tracking system that meant customers could grab a table and wait for their food to arrive. No more hanging around at the counter — something that was far from ideal for parents with young children.
We improved the food on offer as well. From fresh cakes and branded coffee to a varied menu of main meals, we made sure Garsons had the means to take on its competition.
Smashing the sales targets
The new restaurant at Garsons Esher has been a massive success. It can often serve more than 1,500 people in a day — a huge leap from before.
And this increased footfall has upped sales across the garden centre. Trading figures have risen by ten per cent since the restaurant’s opening — showing just how well customers respond to receiving a superior service by a retailer.
